Notes
I made three felts before arriving on the island, knowing how long each would take to make, shrink and dry. I’d embellish them during quiet times and invite visitors to make a felt pebble, and perhaps leave a cuddy stone, that I’d sew onto the felts – a way of leaving something of ourselves on an island that gives us so much.
Cuddy stones are fossils of crinoids (early plant life) that grew 300 million years ago. Legend has it that St Cuthbert used them as prayer beads.
They can be found on the beach near his little island at low tide – for those with an eye for finding them!
