Peter Bone – Sussex and Hampshire
In 2004 after many years of lay leadership within Baptist and Anglican churches I met a crisis point in my faith. The formulation of the Christian faith that I had lived by just didn’t seem to be working any more and I was trying more assiduously to paper over cracks of doubt and cynicism, while feeling increasingly alien to what was going on around me.
Following a retreat with the Northumbria Community, Margaret and I felt that for our own good, and of those around us, it was right to walk our spiritual path detached from any institutional affiliation. The journey has at times been difficult but is more authentic and it feels as if we are at least now grappling with some of the right questions. We are certainly inspired by the people that we have met along the way.
These days our sense of belonging comes from a small group called On The Edge who meet fortnightly in our home. The name probably says it all! Together we explore silence and aspects of Christian spirituality, taking a book and discussing it together over 6 months. Our two most recent books have been The Wisdom Jesus by Cynthia Bourgeault and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. We’ve also benefitted enormously from occasional courses, particularly the year long Inspire course (Christian spirituality foundation course) run by the Portsmouth Anglican Diocese.
By day I work as a librarian, spending my time assisting schools with their book and library provision. I am very committed to creating a reading, literate generation.
